Bergamo Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

Majestic and imposing, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore dominates Piazza del Duomo, in the heart of Bergamo Alta.

The exterior of the Basilica, built starting in the second half of the 12th century, is characterized by a sober and linear Romanesque style. Inside, the decorations are a triumph of Baroque.

The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore was commissioned by the people of Bergamo as a votive offering to the Madonna to put an end to a long period of epidemics. In the small porticoes protecting and covering the church's main entrance, a 14th-century work by Giovanni da Campione, two red and two white marble lions guard the north and south entrances.

The Basilica stands on the ruins of a smaller church. Of the five original apses, two can still be seen today. The masonry structure testifies to the basilica's construction at different times. The eastern section and the lower section are characterized by large, regular, and well-squared blocks. The rest of the building features smaller, irregular blocks. The sandstone used ranges in color from a soft amber yellow to a typical stony gray. Frescoes, stuccoes, tapestries, and wooden inlays designed by Lorenzo Lotto decorate the building's interior.

Streets of Bergamo's Città Alta

Highlight • Settlement

Among the beauties of Bergamo Città Alta, its streets and alleys, with their unique charm, cannot be overlooked.

Among these we remember in particular Via Donizetti, Via Arena, via Colleoni, Via delle Mura and Via Porta Dipinta.

Shoe Market Square

Highlight • Settlement

A place formerly dedicated to trade and commerce, the Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe is located at the meeting point of the then most important access routes to the Upper Town.

According to tradition, this square owes its name to the ancient presence of the Guild of Shoemakers, which had its headquarters in the fourteenth-century building whose facade is still preserved, where the funicular station stands today.

San Giacomo Gate

Highlight • Monument

In the past Porta San Giacomo represented the entrance to the Upper Town for those arriving from Milan. This is the only access to the Walls that is perfectly visible from viale Vittorio Emanuele, the axis that crosses Bergamo Bassa from south to north. As with the other entrances to the city, the Lion of San Marco, symbol of Venetian domination, dominates this one as well. It is one of the most photographed places in Bergamo: leaning against the balustrade you will enjoy a beautiful view of the Venetian fortifications and of the Lower Town and of the plain up to the Apennines.

Nice climb to the Upper Town, an alternative to the funicular or a longer but less steep ride. The view is fantastic when you get to the top.

True to our 2-day activity rhythm, hiking - something different - hiking - ..., what "something different" about it today.
So a tourist trip through Bergamo, a beautiful, ancient city. The many special features cannot all be briefly listed, so only the most important thing: Stracciatella ice cream was invented here in 1961 😋

A charming, beautiful, vibrant city in Lombardy with a lower and upper town. The entrance to the old town is the Piazza Vecchia with many small and large alleys with small shops and many cafes. It is fun to stroll around. This is followed by the Bergamo Cathedral, the Santa Maria Maggiore and the Capella Colleoni - surrounded by Venetian …
