Cedar Falls

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

All told, the remade rail line known as the Palouse to Cascades Trail — also known as the Iron Horse or John Wayne trails — contains more than 100 miles (161 km) of trail from Cedar Falls to the Columbia River, all in a state park that only measures 100 feet (30 m) in width.

This trail's very gentle grades make for pleasant hiking, and surprisingly beautiful views when the trees open up at magnificent trestle bridges. The trail is very popular with cyclists as well.

Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail Bridge

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

The Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail is a long gravel route across Washington, great for bikepacking or long rides. The Snoqualmie Tunnel is a must—dark, damp, and fun (bring lights). Expect wind and remote stretches, so pack water and gear. Riding over trestles and through changing landscapes keeps things interesting the whole way.

Avalanche Shed in Palouse to Cascades State Park

Highlight (Segment) • Monument

This is one of several avalanche sheds that protected the railroad in the winter - and the only one still standing. Nice signboard explaining how it worked and why it was important. You will find other spots with footings and parts of sheds still up, but this is the best preserved of them all.

Snoqualmie Tunnel west entrance

Highlight • Structure

Western end of a 2.5 mile tunnel under Snoqualmie Pass. Former railroad tunnel, now open April-September (depending on snow). Great adventure destination - you can cross the pass to the ski areas on the east side. Be sure to bring plenty of lights and a jacket - it's cold, slightly humid and very, very dark!

Snoqualmie Tunnel

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

One instant you're riding along a mountain trail and the next you find yourself in a completely dark tunnel (expect the tiny prick of light at the end). Soak up the sounds and the cool air as you ride under a mountain - how cool is that. Just don't forget your lights and a jacket.

Mine Creek Trestle Bridge

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

Winding through old-growth forest, this trail provides excellent views of the neighboring peaks on a high trestle bridge that adds an extra layer of special scenery.

Hall Creek Trestle

Highlight • Bridge

The Hall Creek Trestle is a historic steel and timber railway bridge built in 1912. It was once the old Milwaukee Road until, in 1988, a storm washed away a central 171-foot section of the bridge. In the 1990s, Washington State Parks restored the trestle, reconnecting the east and west segments of the former rail line, which is now part of the Palouse to Cascades (Iron Horse) Trail. The views down into Hall Creek Valley are genuinely stunning and worth the ride!
