Description
The Bayshore Bikeway – Silver Strand State Beach loop from Massachusetts Avenue is a fantastic touring cycling route, offering a moderate 43.4-mile (69.9 km) journey with 1222 feet (373 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 4 hours and 7 minutes. This route is perfect for cyclists looking for a long, scenic ride with varied coastal and urban views, especially if you appreciate a mostly flat profile but are ready for some on-road sections.
What to expect on Bayshore Bikeway – Silver Strand State Beach loop from Massachusetts Avenue
Starting from Massachusetts Avenue, you'll quickly connect to the predominantly flat Bayshore Bikeway. The terrain is largely smooth, dedicated multi-use paths, though some sections on the eastern side through Chula Vista and National City involve on-road bike lanes that can be bumpier. You'll enjoy expansive views of the San Diego Bay and the downtown skyline, particularly as you pass under the iconic San Diego-Coronado Bridge and by Tidelands Park. The highlight for many is the Silver Strand portion, where you ride with the Pacific Ocean on one side and the San Diego Bay on the other, passing the historic Hotel del Coronado and the U.S. Naval Amphibious Base. While generally considered easy due to its flat profile, the full distance and potential strong crosswinds along the exposed Silver Strand can make it a moderate challenge, best suited for cyclists comfortable with longer distances and some shared road sections.
Planning your visit
Be aware that there is very little shade along the entire route, so sun exposure is a significant factor; plan accordingly with sunscreen and hydration. Strong crosswinds are common, especially along the Silver Strand, which can increase the effort required. While much of the route is dedicated path, some sections include street crossings and shared on-road bike lanes, particularly on the eastern side, so stay alert for typical urban traffic hazards. Navigation can occasionally be tricky in sections with less clear signage. You'll find numerous amenities along the route, especially in Coronado and Imperial Beach, including restrooms, cafes, restaurants, and bike rental shops. Silver Strand State Beach also offers facilities like restrooms and picnic areas. Cyclists can also use the Coronado Ferry to cross the bay, which can shorten the ride or allow you to avoid some of the less scenic, more industrial on-road sections on the eastern side.
