What to expect on Black Walnut Trail loop from Puente Hills Preserve
The trail offers a varied journey, starting with a challenging, sun-exposed ascent on a wide dirt road that can have a 10-15% grade for about half a mile. As you continue, the route descends continuously towards Powder Canyon Trail, where you'll find welcome shade from mature oak and Southern California black walnut trees. These black walnut trees are a significant feature, providing a valuable food source for local wildlife and making the area particularly vibrant in spring with wildflowers. You'll also enjoy expansive panoramic views of the region, making the effort well worth it for the scenery.
Planning your visit
Access to the trail is convenient from the Fullerton Road Trailhead, which offers curbside parking and an informational kiosk. Be aware of the preserve's operating hours: 9 AM to 6 PM from June to September, and 9 AM to 5 PM from October to May. Trails are subject to closure for 48 hours after significant rain due to slick conditions, and all trails close during "red flag days" due to extreme fire hazard, so check conditions before you go.
