Chapel of Our Lady of Good Will Perkbos

Highlight • Religious Site

Do you know the history of the small, old (Kontich) chapel? It goes back to a legend from Duffel in 1637, when a small, primitive statue of the Virgin Mary was found in the hollow of a pollard willow. It soon became an object of popular devotion and a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Good Will was built.
Thousands of pilgrims sacrificed a lot of money or bought medals, pennants, ex votos and prayer cards. The proceeds were also invested in a lot of silverware. In 1683, this stuck out the eyes of six villains: they broke in and stole it. They met in the Langbos in Kontich to divide the loot. The statuette was left behind in an oak tree, the silver was sold in Bergen-op-Zoom. The figurine was found, and months later five of the six thieves. They were broken to pieces.
In gratitude, ardent Marian worshipers from the area had a chapel built on the spot where the statue had been found. Here, too, an influx of pilgrims arose who filled the offering block. However, the poor council of Kontich demanded half of the funds. The parish of Lint, then still a hamlet of Kontich, opposed this. This quarrel lasted for years until a wealthy widow from Lint had a new and more spacious chapel built in nearby Perkbos. It was consecrated in 1838. In 1869, however, Lint became an independent municipality and the railway became the border, so that the Lintse chapel came to be located on the territory of Kontich...

Babbelse Plassen

Highlight • Lake

Langbos & Babbelse Plassen is part of the Grote Boshoek landscape park that connects nature reserves in Lier, Boechout, Lint, Duffel and Kontich. In the Babbelse Plassen, next to the Langbos, pollard willows and wooded edges surround the flowery meadows. In the spring the meadows here turn pink with blooming real cuckoo flowers. Plants such as the rare brook punge and marsh marigold grow in the wetter parts.

Weyninckhoven Castle

Highlight • Castle

A castle dating from the 13th century is now used as the town hall of Hove. The castle park is open to the public.
Interesting fact: During the 15th century, the castle was owned by Pieter Pot, a wealthy businessman from Dordrecht. Pieter Pot was the founder of the abbey of the same name in Antwerp. The Grote and Kleine Pieter Potstraat in old Antwerp is also named after this financier/founder of the Saint Salvator Abbey.
