Plantloon Estate

Highlight • Forest

The Landgoed Plantloon nature reserve, located southeast of Waalwijk, has been part of the Loonse en Drunense dunes park since 1994.
Plantloon has a completely different character than the shifting sand area in the Loonse and Drunense Duinen.
The estate is one of the last remnants of the Brabant marshland landscape culture.
Since the 13th century, the area has consisted of a few farms, forests, fields and wasteland, avenues, deciduous forests and meadows with hedgerows.
Characteristic avenues with oak and beech trees, the alternation of the forest with agricultural land, picturesque farms and the traces of the former peat trade.
Special here is a remnant of a peat canal that was dug around 1400 to transport the peat from Kaatsheuvel to Den Bosch.

In 1936, the Grenadiers Regiment built a shooting range here for the Waalwijk Civil Guard. The track was 100 meters long and ended in a bullet trap. You can see this earthen wall further down. Ten meters in front of the wall was a deep trench from which the targets were hoisted up. The slot is not present.

The Waalwijk Civil Guard consisted of volunteers who helped the government in maintaining public order and peace. For their shooting training they used the shooting range in Loon op Zand, for which they had to cross the dunes on foot. The wish to have our own shooting range came true in 1936 when this range was opened by Mayor Moonen.
The Civil Guard was not able to use it for long, because the track was closed down by the German occupiers in 1940.

Old peat canal

Highlight • River

The Turfvaart, Paul van Haastrecht, lord of Venloon, had it built in 1396. Mr van Waalwijk, Foijken Foijkenszoon, did not agree and wanted to levy toll on the peat shipping. Paul's successor, Dirk van Haastrecht, then erected a gallows in the far north of the area to indicate that it concerned his jurisdiction, over which Mr van Waalwijk had no say. This is how the Gallows Wheel got its name. A punitive expedition to Waalwijk was held from 's-Hertogenbosch. The city was taken and Foijken fled. Two more wheel crosses were placed next to the gallows, on which two criminals were broken on the wheel. All this to underline that this area belonged to Venloon. (Wikipedia)
