Mussel Monument Philippine

Highlight • Monument

Mussel shell cast in a mixture of ground bluestone and synthetic resin, with a kind of water pipe through which water continuously flows over the mussel.
The mussel monument, created on the initiative of the artist himself, was unveiled on July 6, 1988 during the presentation of the mussel wine by Prof. Dr. Wisse Dekker and Nancy Cornelis, the mussel queen. The maker of the monument thought that his creation would look better if a bench was added.

Sherman Tank Memorial Balgerhoeke

Highlight • Monument

At this location you stand in front of the M4A4 Sherman Tank "Clanky".
In 1990, on Eeklose territory, at the lock of Balgerhoeke, a Sherman tank was placed in honor of our Canadian liberators. During their Battlefield Tour of that year, the South Alberta Regiment was honorably and symbolically presented with this Sherman tank that was dedicated to all involved Canadian units and to the 4th Canadian Armoured Division, of which the South Alberta Regiment was an important fighting unit.

Celie Bridge - Schipdonk Canal

Highlight • Bridge

The Celie Bridge enables the connection between Maldegem and Celie - Sint-Laureins.
Celie is an old district on the Lieve in Adegem and Sint-Laureins, already mentioned in the 14th century.

Historical explanation:
The Schipdonk Canal or the Leie Diversion Canal was dug in the bed of the Lieve. The canal connected the Leie in Deinze with the North Sea in Zeebrugge. As a diversion canal, the canal was mainly intended to limit flooding, but the canal also played an important role as a new trade route between Deinze and Bruges. A first section, from the Leie in Deinze to the Brugse Vaart in Schipdonk in Merendree, was already dug in 1847-49. From Stoktevijver in Zomergem to Maldegem, part of the Leie Diversion Canal was dug in the bed of the Lieve in the period 1854-60. From Maldegem, the canal was dug further parallel to the Leopold Canal to Heist. When the canal was constructed, the old buildings around the Celie Bridge over the Lieve also disappeared. The current Celie Bridge over the Schipdonk Canal is an iron drawbridge, rebuilt after the destruction of the Second World War, according to a design by the Ministry of Public Works from 1947.

Vrouwkenshoekkreek

Highlight • Lake

This brook, the Vrouwkenshoekkreek, is said to be one of the most beautiful in the region. Decide for yourself. In any case, he has made a nice change. Because he didn't look good in the 1950s.

The neighboring Leopold Canal had been widened and deepened and the mound of earth that arose in the process was tipped into the Vrouwkenshoekkreek. Not a good idea. Fortunately, it was returned to its original beauty and renatured.

Hundreds of water birds, especially the Marsh Harrier, visit the wonderfully flat brook area, especially in autumn. But also at all other times of the year you will be impressed by the vastness and the dancing sunlight on the flat polders.
