Bellamypark

Highlight • Settlement

You've undoubtedly been there many times. Whether it was for the liberation festival, Vlissingen sings or just to sit on a terrace, there is always a lot to do at the Bellamypark. But why did the Bellamy Park actually get this unusual name? We looked it up for you.

If you stand in Bellamy Park, you probably won't guess that the square is only a century old. In the past, there were fishing and merchant ships that provided life for the brewery. What is now the Bellamypark and the Spuistraat was then the city's port. Because the old port of Vlissingen, which was located some distance inland, began to silt up in the early fourteenth century, Count William III decided to build a new port closer to the Scheldt. The intention was probably that a new city would also be created there. That harbor was located where the Bellamypark and Spuistraat are now located.
While the ships were moored in front of the houses and porters did their heavy work, Jacobus Bellamy was born on November 12, 1757 in the house at number 30. You guessed it: the eventual namesake of the square. He came from a family that belonged to the middle class of the population and became known thanks to his poems. Together with Betje Wolff from Vlissingen, after whom Betje Wolffplein is named, he was very important for the culture and science in the city.
In short: Bellamy was an important person in Vlissingen history. So important that the Bellamy Park is named after him. In 2012, the park underwent a major renovation, making it look as we know it today. The square is now best known for its many events and terraces. But the next time you stand there, you will now know the history behind one of the nicest places in the city!

From up here you have a good view of Vlissingen and the sea. From the city center, a solar shuttle travels across the dune path to the ferry to Breskens 👍😁
