Gansakkermolen - Sint-Amands

Highlight • Monument

Not much to see yet, but...
At the end of 2024, there will be a working mill again in Sint-Amands (Puurs-Sint-Amands). The historic Gansakkermolen from 1797 was originally located in Geel, but will soon be restored and rebuilt in Sint-Amands. During Open Monument Day, everyone could visit the future site where the Mill Museum is now located.

Tomb of Émile Verhaeren

Highlight • Monument

The poet Emile Verhaeren died tragically: when he got off a train, he fell under the wheels and was run over.

The French state wanted to erect an honorary grave for him in the Panthéon in Paris, but the family refused. She had him buried in the Adinkerke military cemetery in the middle of the First World War. After a stopover in Wulveringen, he has been in his home village of Sint-Amands since 1927.

Esplanade - Sint-Amands Quay

Highlight • Viewpoint

Along the banks of the authentic village of Sint-Amands is one of the most beautiful bends of the Scheldt, a picturesque landscape made famous by the successful television series 'Stille Waters'. This series refers to the special moment when the flow of the river, between ebb and flow, seems to stand still for a moment. A striking sight along these banks is the mausoleum of the village poet Emile Verhaeren, a dignified place with a beautiful view of the meandering Scheldt.

Interestingly, here you can also enjoy a unique experience called 'bank hopping'. The triangular ferry between Mariekerke, Moerzeke and Sint-Amands allows you to travel to the other side of the river in no time, giving you the opportunity to explore various scenic locations along the Scheldt.

Tourist Steam Train

Highlight • Monument

A steam train thunders on the old railway line Dendermonde - Mechelen during the tourist season. Here you can sniff and smell nostalgia.

Kedeng, Kedeng! Here comes the steam train puffed. He drags a plume of smoke behind him that gently but surely blows away in the clouds. The steel colossus thunders and trudges, comes to a stop with screeching brakes and waits shiny in front of the platform. Are you getting in?

Go through Scheldeland
Today you will ride on a 14 kilometer long railway that meanders through Scheldeland. You can board a real steam train – every Sunday in July, August and September. Do not forget to get off at one of the stations where you will find charming villages. Explore the region on foot or by bike, stop at one of the restaurants in the area or discover the lush nature of Scheldeland!
