Nufenen Reformed Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Reformed Church Nufenen in the Rheinwald
The Reformed Church in Nufenen in the Rheinwald is a Protestant-Reformed church under the monument protection of the canton of Graubünden. It has been a preaching church since the Reformation was adopted around 1530, as evidenced by the glass window in the choir with a verse by Martin Luther.
From around 1300 to 1696, Nufenen and Hinterrhein formed an ecclesiastical unit before Nufenen became independent in 1874. After that both villages went together again. The church in Nufenen has existed since 1643, when the Graubünden turmoil came to an end and the political and ecclesiastical situation in Graubünden calmed down and slowly consolidated.
The barely plastered church tower has a pronounced onion dome. The interior of the church is dominated by a pulpit without a sound cover on the left side and a baptismal font in the middle of the choir, on which the Lord's Supper is also celebrated. The choir is separated from the nave by a segmental arch.

Hinterrhein Village

Highlight • Settlement

Hinterrhein (Rhaeto-Romanic Valragn)
Around 1270 the first Walsers came from the Val Formazza via the Misox to the Hinterrhein. This made Hinterrhein the oldest Walser settlement in Graubünden. In 1274 two settlers from Hinterrhein signed a vassal contract with the Lord of Sax-Misox. But Baron Walter IV von Vaz, who owned the Schams and the area up to Splügen, which was still inhabited by Romans, as an episcopal fief, tried in 1277 to sign a protection agreement with the Theutunici of Hinterrhein. In 1286 the monastery of San Vittore bequeathed the land in the valley to the colonists in Hinterrhein for an annual interest of 16 pounds. This obligation to pay interest was only replaced in 1773 with 100 Lire di Milano. This contract of inheritance names the origins of 16 colonists: Val Formazza (Pomatt), Simplon, Brig, Valle Maggia. The term Walser first appeared in this area around 1599.
With the construction of the commercial road from Chur to Bellinzona in 1820 and the opening of the Gotthard railway in 1882, the residents of the Hinterrhein lost their source of income from the many centuries of mule trading. The Alte Landbrugg above the Hinterrhein dates back to the time of the mule trade. Thanks to the San Bernardino road tunnel opened in 1967, Hinterrhein is now easily accessible from the north and south both in summer and in winter. Milan and Zurich can be reached in two hours.

Hinterrhein Reformed Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Reformed Church Hinterrhein
In 1219, the lords of Sax-Misox donated their church, which was under the patronage of St. Peter, to the collegiate monastery in San Vittore im Misox. In doing so, they established a connection between the Hinterrhein and the Italian-speaking southern valley of Graubünden that lasted until the Reformation. With the acceptance of the new faith, Hinterrhein sought a connection to Splügen.
The historically particularly valuable baptismal font in front of the inner entrance door of the church dates back to the time of the medieval Walser migration and the first settlement in Graubünden. The interior of the church is dominated by a high pulpit with a sound cover and a baptismal font in the chancel, which also serves as a communion table. The barely plastered church tower with a single-storey belfry has a flat dome.

Highlight • Religious Site

Medels is a small village in the Rheinwald region, where only about 40 people live today. In addition to the old farmhouses, the village church is worth seeing.
