Tirrenia Sundial (Pisa)

Highlight • Monument

Sundial of Tirrenia (Pisa)
Latitude 43° 37' 38" N - Longitude 10° 17' 23" E
This equatorial sundial with a spot of light with a local true time polar dial has as its progenitors two historical astronomical instruments: the circle of Hipparchus and partly the armillary sphere of Eratosthenes. The sundial was created inside the large central flowerbed of Piazza Belvedere, the main square of Tirrenia, the town destined by the founders to become the "Pearl of the Tyrrhenian" thanks to the enchanting sandy beaches and fervent urban planning. Tirrenia from 1934 to 1969 was the Italian Hollywood with the Tirrenia Film Studios, then Pisorno and finally Cosmopolitan Film; in fact, the sundial is inspired by the historic and now almost forgotten vocation of Tirrenia as a city of cinema.
The fundamental elements of this sundial metaphorically recall the projection of a film: the projector lamp is the Sun, the expertly wrapped stylized cinematographic film shows the frames (the hours of the day) to be enlarged and projected on the screen (the polar dial). The cinematographic film arranged in a circle, a circle oriented and inclined like the celestial equator, acts as a gnomon as a spot of light as it is engraved with the numbers indicating the hours of the day from 6 to 18. The numbers are projected onto the polar dial on which the line to identify the time is also drawn. The dial is parallel to the Earth's axis and therefore points north towards the Pole Star. The simplicity of reading this sundial comes from its very structure, just follow the number (spot of light) projected by the gnomon on the dial line over the course of the day. The sundial provides the true local time of Tirrenia, which can be converted into civil time thanks to the equation of time.
The watch was made of AISI 316 steel by the Lambardi company of Pisa.

Piazza Belvedere

Highlight • Settlement

Piazza Belvedere, enclosed between two stretches of beautiful coastal pine forest (which still retains the original structure of a large beach with remains of dunes of very fine sand), is the center of seaside, commercial and recreational life in Tirrenia; it is very popular in summer, but retains its sweet and melancholic charm even in winter.
