Church of San Giacomo (St. Jakob), Ortisei

Highlight • Religious Site

The exact origin of the church cannot be determined. Some historians believe it was built around 1181. However, according to tradition, the Counts ofstättenecke were the builders of the church, although they do not appear until the second half of the 13th century. It is first documented in a surviving indulgence dated August 18, 1283.

From this panoramic point in Val Gardena, on the right of the homonymous stream and not far from the center of Santa Cristina, you have a splendid view of the Sassolungo massif and, in part, also of the Catinaccio. These are two of the most famous rock formations in the Dolomites.

The Passo Gardena road is an Italian state road that connects Val Gardena with Val Badia, running at the foot of the Sella Group. The view while you drive along it (downhill or uphill, depending on the direction) is something exceptional!
