Lake Kaltern contains the largest preserved wetland area between the Po Valley and the main Alpine ridge, which was also included in the European network of "Natura 2002" protected areas. This reed area is the only larger habitat of this species between the Reschenpass and Verona and lies at the fork of the main bird flight lines. This is why fish and purple herons, ruffs, snipe, lapwings, black swans, osprey, cranes, cormorants and white storks appear again and again. You can watch the animals from a lookout tower, where most of the birds are described. You can hike through the biotope and admire frogs and amphibians via the nature adventure trail. In the summer of 2010, the nature adventure trail on Lake Kaltern was expanded and extended. Especially recommended for families with children.
