Ruwer-Hochwald Cycle Path Starting Point

Highlight • Cycleway

The Ruwer-Hochwald cycle path is another highlight of the railway cycle paths in the Hunsrück. The 48-kilometer route from Trier / Ruwer to Hermeskeil is one of the most beautiful bike paths on railway lines in Germany. Most of the route runs on the route of the former Hochwaldbahn, only the section Zerf - Mandern sewage treatment plant uses a farm road (nature conservation). The cycle path initially follows the river Ruwer upwards in a southerly direction and crosses it on numerous bridges (the railway line had 28 Ruwer bridges). In the lower course between Ruwer and Pluwigerhammer, viticulture dominates, then the route dips into a lonely, wooded section through the Ruwertal. After Zerf, the cycle path makes a curve to the east and leaves the railway line for nature conservation reasons. On a farm road it goes with a moderate gradient to Mandern. In front of the site, the cycle path changes back to the railway line to Kell am See. There the Ruwer, who turns north here, leaves the cycle path. At about 38 km, just before Reinsfeld, the highest point on the route is reached. On the plateau through a depression and then slightly downhill again you reach the Hermeskeil train station. The main asset of this cycle path is the lonely landscape of the upper Ruwertal and the heights of the high forest.
