The Skywalk adventure began in September 2016. That year, hotelier Gert Göbel and some business friends went on an excursion to Austria. On the way back to the bus, the Skywalk founding partners Arndt Brüne and Markus Wilke were so taken with the idea of a suspension bridge in the Upland that they started implementing the "Skywalk" project. They tinkered and planned, worked and tried things out. The plan soon became more concrete.

In the summer of 2017, a project company was founded in which over a hundred private individuals and business people joined forces and provided the start-up capital. The local banks contributed the rest of the construction costs of around 4.5 million euros. Planning at the new Willingen location took about three years. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in January 2022 and the project gradually took shape. About a year and a half later, in July 2023, Germany's longest suspension bridge was officially opened and has since attracted numerous adrenaline seekers and active enthusiasts from near and far.

Hochheideturm Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Willinger Hochheideturm has been the highest walk-in lookout point in north-west Germany since 2002. Higher than on the observation deck (at 875 meters), you will not find anywhere in the region.
If you still have enough strength in your legs, you will reach the glazed observation deck over 241 steps. But there is also a lift available and you can so comfortably enjoy the great view from up there.
Speaking of strength - you can refuel in the Ettelsberg hut next door. The hut keeper Siggi always ensures a good mood with his whistle trumpet or the alphorn and the burning "hut spirit" and the pea soup in the glass have reached a true cult status.

While this area was still a treeless tundra around 10,000 years ago, forests conquered large parts of the region with the subsequent warming. Only in some places has the tundra vegetation survived or been favored by grazing animals and the subsequent impoverishment of the soils. This is particularly evident and impressive in the moors and on some rocks at the highest elevations. There you will find the sparse dwarf forests amidst heathlands. Beautiful.

Hochheide Hut, Niedersfeld

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The wooden hut beckons you to take a break at a lofty height. The restaurant is located at 805 meters, very close to the highest mountain in North Rhine-Westphalia - the Langenberg.

The fresh delicacies from the Hochheidehütte taste particularly good in the idyllic heath landscape. The hut team will spoil you with delicious food, grandma's country cakes and fresh waffles.

A good herbal liqueur and a Veltins on tap are a must, but be careful - otherwise you will miss the onward journey through the wonderful heath landscape. ;)

Next to Winterberg, Willingen is a real hotspot for athletes in the Sauerland. The city is particularly interesting for downhill and freeride fans. One of the largest bike parks in the Sauerland is at home here. But other nature and sports enthusiasts will also get their money's worth in Willingen. If the bike park is too much for you, you can use the well-developed network of hiking trails or the climbing hall. From the Strycktal you get a great view of the city and above all of the Willingen Viaduct, which is over 100 years old.
