Description
If you're looking for a serious gravel biking challenge in the Tillamook State Forest, the Cochran Pond loop from Reeher Forest Park delivers. This difficult 17.0 miles (27.3 km) route packs in 1533 feet (467 metres) of elevation gain, taking around 1 hour and 51 minutes to complete. It's a demanding ride best suited for those with very good fitness and advanced riding skills, offering a true test of endurance and technique.
What to expect on Cochran Pond loop from Reeher Forest Park
The route plunges you deep into the lush Tillamook State Forest, winding through dense stands of Douglas-fir and Western Hemlock. You'll navigate primarily gravel and dirt roads, with some sections potentially paved, but be ready for larger rocks under your tires. The topography is characterized by steep, circuitous sections, meaning significant uphill climbs and equally steep descents, especially on parts of Cochran Road. Expect panoramic vistas of the Oregon Coast Range from higher elevations and a sense of immersion in a landscape shaped by historical logging and reforestation.
Planning your visit
Starting from Reeher Forest Park, this loop takes you into a remote part of the Tillamook State Forest. Be prepared for limited cell service in many sections, so download your route beforehand. The area around Reeher's Camp is known for active logging sites, so stay alert for heavy machinery. Given the significant elevation changes and challenging terrain, ensure your bike is in excellent condition and carry plenty of water and snacks.
