Surf Drive Beach (Falmouth Beach)

Highlight • Beach

Surf Drive Beach is a just off of the road on the narrow strip between the ocean and Salt Pond. There is soft sand, calm surf, short rock jetties, and great views over the Vineyard Sound. Since it's just a few yards off the road, it's a great beach to enjoy on your ride. Surf Drive also intersects with the Shining Sea Bikeway just a short distance west of here, making it easily accessible by bike.

It is comprised of a series of kettle ponds that flooded at the end of the last glacial period. Additionally, it is one of the most studied ponds for its size, in large part due to its proximity to several major science institutions at the world-famous Woods Hole.

Salt Pond Areas Bird Sanctuary

Salt Pond is a non-profit privately administered corporation and 35-acre bird sanctuary, located close to the Falmouth coast. This wildlife area has nature trails and a bike path, and is mostly flat, offering views of the pond and the coast. A very enjoyable place to run while observing the different species of birds, such as swans, geese, ducks, gulls, herons, and ospreys.

Salt Pond is located within the 35-acre Salt Pond Area Bird Sanctuary. This particular spot is a great lookout over Salt Pond accessed via a short spur trail off the Swan Trail. From this viewing point, you have the opportunity to see many different types of birds, including swans, geese, and ducks, gulls and herons, and, of course, the iconic osprey!
