Hambach Open-pit Mine Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Hambach opencast mine is one of three remaining active opencast mines in the Rhenish lignite mining area. It is the largest lignite mine in Europe and is located in the middle of the lignite mining area between the municipality of Niederzier and the town of Elsdorf. The Hambach opencast mine was started in 1978 near the Niederzier district of Hambach and is over 350 meters deep. 1.35 billion tons of brown coal are stored beneath its 85 square kilometer mining field. Around 40 million tons of coal are mined every year.

Here you can hardly get up with a normal bike! An electrical support is already recommended! Otherwise push! But it takes off ..... :-)

Kerpen–Düren Cycle Path

Highlight • Cycleway

You can drive here very nicely and almost without a car or crossing. However, the two crossings are particularly stupid because they are not easy to see. You have to stop because otherwise it's so dangerous.

On both sections together, you drive about 6.6 km on the finest wide asphalt without traffic on the way. The freeway runs parallel and brings with it a certain level of noise. So just shut up :-). The path is great to drive, does not require any special skills and is therefore fully recommended.

interesting tour on the edge of the Hambach opencast mine. It's oppressive when you drive through the deserted village of Morschenich. Only a few residents still live there

Showing Translation

Quickly taking advantage of the "cool" weather today for a little hike (it's only 36°C 😂)

At the Roman Tower on Sophienhöhe, you're standing about 595 m above the bottom of the open-cast mine, which is currently at about 293 m below sea level.
Unfortunately, you can't see the open-cast mine from the Roman Tower due to the trees.
