Unterfalkenstein

Construction of the Danube Valley Railway

The railway line between Inzigkofen and Tuttlingen was built between 1887 and 1890.
4 tunnels had to be blown up and 12 bridges had to be built over the Danube, a pioneering feat.
The Thierstein Tunnel is 250 m long and planned to have two tracks. The holes for the explosive charges had to be drilled by hand. The bridges were delivered prefabricated and riveted on site.
The abutments made of red sandstone were transported from the Black Forest by horse-drawn carriages.

The Tuttlingen–Inzigkofen railway line is a single-track and non-electrified 37.08-kilometer-long railway line in southern Baden-Württemberg. The main line connects the Tuttlingen railway junction with the former Inzigkofen junction station, which is now only a junction where it joins the Tübingen–Sigmaringen railway line. The entire route runs along the young Danube and is therefore classified by Deutsche Bahn as part of the Danube Railway from Donaueschingen to Ulm.
