Brompton Road Intersection on Route 57

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

This is a terrible section of the cycle network on B roads that are used by heavy haulage and on very low lying land resulting in dangerous fast roads with heavy goods vehicles that is often flooded, I would avoid this section when planning any tours, however there are precious little options for traversing this area, probably why there was little choice but to route the 57 on these roads.

Here the route is much better and whilst there isn't much in the way of scenery the surface is solid and the roads relatively quite with offroad routes nearby into oxford at Brasenose Wood.

"Cowley Road Methodist Church, Oxford was originally called Wesley Hall. The design of the church exterior by the architect Stephen Salter, was influenced by the 'arts and crafts' movement of the time. The asymmetric plan was very unusual. In 1972, the exterior of the church became Grade II listed.

The church first opened its doors for worship in September 1904. It was built to accommodate a rapidly developing congregation which had met at a chapel in Tyndale Road for the previous 20 years. The church owes its formation to this group of Christians, led and inspired by Walter Slaughter, a local grocer. A memorial tablet to Mr Slaughter still hangs in the church today, as does a tablet in honour of twenty-one men associated with the church who died in World War I."

Wheatley Windmill

Highlight • Historical Site

Wheatley Windmill is an 18th-century tower mill at grid reference SP 589 053 between the hamlet of Littleworth and Wheatley in Oxfordshire, England. The windmill has an octagonal plan which narrows to form the circular rotating cap.

The Mill Building.
The octagonal shape of this 18th-century tower mill is distinctly unusual; there are only two or three such towers in the UK. The tower has three storeys. There are two fireplaces on the ground floor (some mills only had one, and others none at all) and a properly framed staircase leads to the 'stone floor', i.e. the first floor, where the mill stones are set. The original curved dome cap was copper clad and has been described as being 'picturesque without being elegant'. There were originally four sails (which turned clockwise rather than the more usual anti-clock) but for a time the windmill operated on two sails only. These were of the 'common' type with a wooden frame rigged with canvas which could be set according to the state of the wind and the amount of work the miller had to do. The canvas used was similar to that used on Thames barges.
