Description
If you're looking for an extreme challenge that pushes your limits, the Notch Reservoir loop from Adams is a mountain biking route that was once legendary for its difficulty. This 31.4-mile (50.5 km) loop, rated difficult, featured an astounding 4036 feet (1230 metres) of climbing and would take an estimated 4 hours and 43 minutes. However, it's crucial to know that the Notch Mountain Trail, which this route likely refers to, is currently closed to mountain biking. Always check with local ranger districts for current access.
What to expect on Notch Reservoir loop from Adams
When it was open to mountain biking, this route was considered an advanced technical and very strenuous ride, truly only suitable for elite mountain bikers. You would have spent most of your time standing on the pedals, navigating big boulders, tight spots, and loose rocks. The trail included a section known as the "Mother of All Hillclimbs," exceeding a 20% grade with loose rock at 10,000 feet altitude. The descent from "The Notch" at 10,400 feet was equally demanding, featuring rapid drops, tight switchbacks, and large rocks. Despite the extreme challenge, the high Uinta Mountains scenery, with views of Ibantik Lake and Wall Lake, was stunning.
Planning your visit
Given the current closure of the Notch Mountain Trail to bicycles, planning a mountain biking trip on this specific route is not possible. Mountain bikers are strongly advised to contact the Kamas Ranger District to confirm the current status of the trail before considering any ride in the area. This closure highlights the importance of checking local regulations and land-use policies before heading out.
