Sélestat Synagogue

Highlight • Religious Site

This building is the work of Alexandre Stamm (1835-1906), municipal architect of the city of Sélestat. The synagogue was inaugurated on September 3, 1890.

Built centrally like the Rhenish synagogues of the time, this synagogue has a very sober, neo-Romanesque decoration. The alternation of different stone layers, yellow sandstone and red bricks as well as the borders with colored sandstone give it a colorful appearance.

Destroyed by the Nazis in 1940, it was restored after the war without its original dome. During this restoration work, the former bath for ritual ablutions from 1836 was uncovered.

Altes Stadttor

Highlight • Other

The Tour Neuve, also called the bell tower or knight's tower, is a remnant of the second enclosure built in 1280. Originally, the New Tower consisted of a crenellated terrace, decorated at the four corners with hexagonal watchtowers. A front door, a kind of open-air vestibule, formed a first defense and sheltered the drawbridge. A door pierced in the tower at the level of the rampart provided communication between the defenders of the advance and those of the enclosure. With the development of artillery at the beginning of the 17th century, the tower underwent changes. A second masonry has been built on the terrace, set slightly back, on which four watchtowers rest. In 1891, the Tour Neuve was hit by a fire that destroyed part of the district and left it without a roof for months. If you visit the New Tower there are several frescoes to admire. One represents some city businesses in the Middle Ages, the other a scene of hunting and the grape harvest. The vault depicts the lion of Sélestat and the Habsburg eagle.
