King's Stables, Palace of Versailles

Highlight • Historical Site

The Palace of Versailles is a French château and historic monument located in Versailles, in the Yvelines. It was the main residence of the kings of France Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI. The king, the court and the government resided there permanently from May 6, 1682 to October 6, 1789, with the exception of the years of the Regency from 1715 to 1723. Wanted by Louis XIV in order to glorify the French monarchy, the château is the most important monument of his reign and one of the masterpieces of classical architecture. It exerted a great influence in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries in the field of architecture and decorative arts1.

The château is made up of a complex set of courtyards and buildings preserving an architectural harmony. It covers 63,154 m2, divided into 2,300 rooms, 1,000 of which are assigned to the National Museum of the Palaces of Versailles and Trianon2.

The park of the Palace of Versailles covers 815 ha, compared to more than 8,000 ha before the French Revolutionnote 1, including 93 ha of gardens. It includes many elements, including the Petit and Grand Trianon (which was the residence of Napoleon I, Louis XVIII, Charles X, Louis-Philippe I, and Napoleon III), the Queen's Hamlet, the Grand and Petit Canal, a menagerie (now destroyed), an orangery and the Swiss pond. Among the most visited in Europe, the site is at the heart of discussions on the management of overtourism.

Palace of Versailles

Highlight • Castle

The Palace of Versailles is the most visited palace in France.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site receives approximately 15 million visitors annually.

It is simultaneously a royal residence, a history museum, and a national palace.

The grounds of the Palace of Versailles are state-owned and cover approximately 787 hectares. Over one hundred rooms of the palace testify to the splendor of the former royal residence, while around one hundred other rooms, covering over 10,000 square meters, house the remarkable collection of paintings and sculptures of the Musée de l’Histoire de France, founded by Louis-Philippe in 1837.

As a small hunting lodge of Louis XIII, it was once ridiculed by the nobility, so the king had it expanded between 1631 and 1634 into a three-winged palace, which still forms the core of the attraction today. Under his son, the "Sun King" Louis XIV, the conversion of the hunting lodge into a palace began.

Versailles was to become the center of royal power under the young king.

In 1667, it was declared the future seat of government, and the court began to move from Paris to Versailles.

The most famous room in the palace is probably the Hall of Mirrors. It is almost 75 meters long and 10 meters wide. Its Gallery of Mirrors ("Galerie des Glaces") consists of 357 mirrored surfaces and serves a very specific function: The mirrors are positioned opposite the 17 floor-to-ceiling windows and are intended to "bring" the park into the hall.

The Hall of Mirrors remained a historically significant and fateful place even after the palace was no longer inhabited following the French Revolution:

The Prussian King Wilhelm I was proclaimed German Emperor there in 1871, and

the First World War was ended in the same spot in 1919 with the Treaty of Versailles.
