Description
If you're looking for a truly epic day on two wheels, the Sassafras Mountain Climb – View from Sassafras Mountain loop from Caesars Head State Park is one of the most challenging road cycling routes in South Carolina. This difficult 66.4-mile (106.8 km) ride packs in a staggering 5538 feet (1688 metres) of elevation gain, taking around 5 hours and 32 minutes to complete. It's best suited for experienced cyclists seeking a significant physical test with a huge payoff.
What to expect on Sassafras Mountain Climb – View from Sassafras Mountain loop from Caesars Head State Park
This route is a journey through dense woodlands and dramatic scenery, especially when the fall colors are at their peak. You'll encounter substantial climbs with average grades around 5.9%, but be prepared for sections reaching up to 20%, particularly on the Sassafras Mountain climb itself. While much of the ride is within the forest, the summit of Sassafras Mountain offers an exceptional reward: panoramic views that can stretch across South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia, and even into Tennessee on a clear day. The observation tower at the top, opened in 2019, enhances this experience, allowing you to stand right on the state border.
Planning your visit
This is a demanding route that requires a high level of fitness. Be aware that some segments of the route may be unpaved, adding to the challenge, and the road surface can have cracks or bumps in areas. Given the significant elevation gain and distance, carry plenty of water and nutrition. The route is located within the Jocassee Gorges Wilderness Area, so you'll experience natural beauty and a sense of isolation. Check weather conditions before you go, as mountain weather can change quickly.
