Valvasone Castle

Highlight • Castle

The Valvasone Castle is the central nucleus of the village of the same name which is now one of the "most beautiful villages in Italy" and also known as Borgo delle Spose. Built in the twelfth century on late ancient pre-existing structures, the castle belonged to the ancient and noble family of the Valvasone, whose name, which in old German means "farm of the wolf", is represented in the coat of arms. Damaged and renovated several times, today it looks like a Renaissance palace. Over the centuries it has hosted several important personalities such as Pope Gregory XII in 1409, Pope Pius VI in 1782 and Napoleon Bonaparte in March 1797. Thanks to recent restorations, it is possible to admire a precious eighteenth-century theater surrounded by a splendid older frieze, dating back to end of the 16th century. In another room, frescoes from the second half of the 14th century have been brought to light, depicting a rare secular cycle.

Valvasone Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

The building structure was constructed in late Romanesque style starting in 1449, furnished over the course of the following century, and rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style at the end of the 19th century, replacing numerous wooden elements with marble and adding a new façade. The church houses a perfectly functioning 16th-century organ, the only one still in existence in Italy from the famous Venetian Renaissance tradition.

The Sette Sorelle Principale dewatering pump is one of the two great works of the Seven Sisters, a toponym already present in cartography from the early 19th century. It was built in 1928, based on a project by Eng. Dal Prà, as part of the reclamation of the vast homonymous basin comprising 2,787 ha. The dewatering pump has a flow rate of 9,000 l / s. The house for the guardian and other local services was built next to the structure in the following years.
