Albury Village

Highlight • Historical Site

Albury is a charming village lying 4 miles (6 km) southeast of Guildford, in the beautiful Tillingbourne Valley.

Albury is probably best known for the picturesque tall chimneys that adorn the early Victorian houses along its main street and for its landscaped lakes by the River Tillingbourne that are stocked for fly-fishing.

The age (circa 1840) of the prominent buildings in Albury arises because the old village of Albury that had existed nearby in Albury Park since medieval times was relocated in 1842 to its current location by command of the Lord of the Manor at Albury Park – this because he objected to the local peasants living so close to his mansion!

The village is well placed for several hiking routes and makes a good stopping point. There are two village stores (with coffee-to-go) and a pub. The main street can be a little busy at times with through-traffic but Albury’s side streets are quiet.

Blackheath Common and the War Memorial

Highlight • Natural Monument

Part of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Blackheath is a dry lowland heath with acidic grasslands, woodlands and areas of heather. A Site of Special Scientific Interest, the heath is an internationally-important habitat for wildlife. Surrey has lost 85% of its heathland in the last 200 years and the rewilding effort at Blackheath is part of a joint effort to reverse this. On Rosemary Hill, you find a war memorial, which was erected in March 1920.

Ruins of the Chilworth Gunpowder Mills

Highlight • Historical Site

The Evelyn family set up a gunpowder works in the area after being awarded the royal monopoly and the industry dominated this area for more than 300 years. The Tillingbourne operated the water mills and the valley was full of alder trees, which were ideal for making the charcoal required as a raw material for gunpowder.
