This peculiarity made Alberobello enter the Unesco World Heritage Site in 1996. The architecture of the trulli was born from the abundance of limestone in the area and from a seventeenth-century edict drawn up by Count Giangirolamo II which prohibited the use of the mortar in the constructions forcing in fact to build with the so-called "dry" technique.
