In 1885, mining began in the south of Recklinghausen for the König Ludwig colliery, which is named after the Bavarian King Ludwig II. The fairy tale king who also built the famous Neuschwanstein Castle near Füssen. The first shaft was on today's Alte Grenzstrasse. In 1902, production started on the new IV / V mine in Suderwich. To the east of Suderwich, production began on the new third shaft VII / VIII at the beginning of the 1930s. We will even take a closer look at the locations on the tour in chronological order from I / II / VI through IV / V to VII / VIII. KLT

The König Ludwig colliery had a lasting effect on the cultural sector in the Ruhr area. After the Second World War, it supplied Hamburg theaters with coal for heating by bypassing the controls by the occupiers, which is why actors finally went to the Ruhr area to retaliate for a guest performance - the Ruhr Festival emerged from this action. At the end of the 1950s, the colliery was gradually closed in the wake of the general coal sales crisis. The colliery was shut down in 1965.

The old colliery railway connecting the pits to the loading port on the Rhine-Herne Canal was expanded in sections to form a cycle path -

the König-Ludwig-Trasse - KLT

The route, which is technically known as the railway cycle path, is around 9 kilometers long. The König-Ludwig-Trasse is signposted through the NRW cycle network. Rusty steel signs with the abbreviation KLT (see figure above) can be found here and there, e.g. in connection with information boards.

The Lippe Bridge over the Dortmund Ems Canal was an old steel trough, which was replaced in the course of the canal widening by two new. In 2005, during the construction of the first new steel trough next to the still existing old trough, there was a leak in the canal. The channel was leaked at this point in the lip and only the gates in Datteln and Lüdinghausen prevented the complete emptying. In 2017 the road under the canal was cleared again.

Not a nice highlight, but please just keep building the König Ludwig route.
Via Datteln "Hagemer Feld", over the "Im Winkel" bridge, over the Verbandstrasse bridge and to the "Halde Ewald continuation" to Oer Erkenschwick.
Then this highlight could also be omitted.

König-Ludwig Route

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The new route connects in the south to the already completed section to the old harbor König-Ludwig am Rhein Herne Kanal.
The KLT Bahntrasse was extended by the new section from the Ortlohstraße in Recklinghausen to the Becklemer Busch (Horneburger Straße in Castrop-Rauxel.
The new section is completely asphalted and is about 7,0 km long.
In the final stage, the former mine railway line from the Rhine-Herne Canal to the Halde General Blumenthal in Oer-Erkenschwick lead and there connect to the Haard.
I drove on to the ship lift Henrichenburg.
