Brestovec Historical Trench

Highlight • Historical Site

Beautiful, perfectly preserved trench, which allows you to understand the real living conditions of the Italian soldiers who during the First World War faced each other with the Austro-Hungarian troops. The low walkway and the step to aim the enemy with rifles make us understand how ephemeral life was in war.
About halfway there are steps through which you descend into a cave dug to shelter from bombing and, probably, as a reservoir for ammunition.

Schönburg Tunnel

Highlight • Historical Site

Continuing along the path that surrounds the entire Sacred Area of Monte San Michele, between Cima 2 and Cima 3, one encounters the entrance portal of the Schönburgtunnel, one of the main defense constructions of the Austro-Hungarian army. Its construction began in 1915 and was carried out by the 7th Feldjager Battalion who dedicated the tunnel to the general of the 6th Infantry Division, Alois von Schönburg Hartenstein, protagonist of the Third Battle of the Isonzo in October 1915.

The four peaks of San Michele. A short and very easy route to immerse yourself in one of the bloodiest battlefields of the Great War.

Rebuilt in the early 1920s in neo-Romanesque style, after being completely destroyed along with the rest of the town during the First World War, the current church of San Martino Vescovo was completed in 1925 and is located in the center of the town.
