Marteller Hut / Martello Refuge

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Martello refuge (or Marteller Hütte in German) is located at about 2,160 meters above sea level, at the top of the Val Martello and well inside the Stelvio National Park. Being surrounded by 15 peaks over 3,000 meters, it is a true panoramic point. You can book a night in the mountains on the refuge's website: martellerhuette.com/it.

Old Dam Wall of the Plima River

Highlight • Monument

When the snow melted in spring, the residents of the Martell Valley had to expect that the meltwater would suddenly pour out beneath the glacier (today it is only a shadow of its former self) and cause the Plimabach to swell to such an extent that severe flooding would occur further down in the valley . It was then decided to build a simple dam that would allow the residents to drain the meltwater in a controlled manner. This meant that the risk of flooding in the lower Martell Valley was largely averted.

For me, the Martelltal is the most beautiful side valley in the Adige Valley / Vinschgau.
On this tour, I planned to combine three separate tours as best I could.

The gorge path along the Plima gorge with imposing buildings that allow you to experience the gorge up close.

A tour of parade at Randomboden!

You start from the Unfallhütte with an easy descent over the Plima suspension bridge and then climb back up through mountain pines. It goes past meadows and below the rugged rock faces, the view wanders again and again to the Fürkeleferner at the Unfallspitze and down into the Martello valley.
The last approx. 200hm …
