Place d'Armes and the Tour du Guet, Calais

Highlight • Historical Site

The Place d'Armes borders the Tour du Guet (the Watchtower) and is strategically located in the heart of the city. Historically it was a central meeting place for military meetings and important ceremonies.
Important scenes took place in this square during the siege of Calais between 1346 and 1347. Six citizens of Calais, known as the “glorious citizens”, surrendered to King Edward III of England to save their city. This heroic moment was later immortalized in the famous bronze sculpture “Les Bourgeois de Calais” by Auguste Rodin.

Pluviôse Monument

Highlight • Other

Around 1444, the English built two jetties, then and a back harbor equipped with a dam allowing to release the waters retained behind for by effect of hunting to empty the mud which accumulated in the port. In 1520, the west pier was 70 toises long and that of the east 90, in front of the Risban. The port of Calais is a French port located at the limit of the English Channel and the North Sea. Only 38 km from the British coast, it is one of the shortest crossing points between continental Europe and the British Isles - the Pas de Calais -, making the Calais-Dover axis an important link between France and Great Britain. First French port for cross-Channel traffic and the first port in continental Europe for travelers. Just under 9 million passengers crossed the English Channel from the port of Calais in 2017, while almost 43 million tonnes of goods transited from the port of Calais to Dover. Since 2015, the ports of Calais and Boulogne, united in a common entity, the Boulogne-Calais port, are managed by the Detroit Port Operating Company (SEPD) as part of a public service delegation and are property of the Hauts-de-France region. fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_de_Calais
