Dolivo Platform (viewpoint over the Rhine fish ladder)

Highlight • Viewpoint

The small viewing platform that protrudes over the banks of the Rhine is perfect for a short break. In order to enable the fish to cross over the weir of the power station, a fish ladder was created here, from which other weirs could cut a good portion - the artificially created, yet natural-looking side arm of the Rhine meanders over almost a kilometer. If in doubt, you could even circumnavigate the weir in a kayak.

The castle complex was once part of the Teutonic Order and dates back to 1268. The large gatehouse dates back to 1534. Today, the semi-circular castle is used as a hotel and conference venue and is a mystical place on the Upper Rhine. The associated church has been expanded several times and was most recently designed in the Baroque style.

There are many restaurants on the Münsterplatz in Bad Säckingen. The beautiful view of the cathedral and the Mediterranean flair create a holiday mood.

Bad Säckingen Covered Bridge

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

The Bad Säckingen wooden bridge connects the German town of Bad Säckingen with the municipality of Stein in Switzerland. At 203.7 meters (206.5 meters with canopies), it is the longest covered wooden bridge in Europe. This makes it longer than the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne, which is 202.9 meters long (204.7 meters with canopies). The bridge is on the list of cultural assets of national importance in the canton of Aargau.

Bad Säckingen Wooden Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The bridge, together with the cathedral, remains the landmark of Bad Säckingen.
When I consider that all traffic used to roll over this bridge, albeit in one lane and regulated by traffic lights.
Today it is hard to imagine what it was like.

Old Saltworks at Möhlin

Highlight • Historical Site

The Riburg Saltworks in Rheinfelden began operations in 1848. Its 32 employees specialize in the production of loose salt, primarily used as de-icing salt. This requires highly efficient distribution logistics, especially in winter; around 1,100 tons of salt are produced daily, and at peak times, up to 8,000 tons of salt are loaded. Some of this is transported by rail. This is a tradition at the Riburg Saltworks: The production facility has been connected to the railway network since 1875, when the Bözberg railway line was put into operation.

To store the salt, the Riburg Saltworks has two gigantic wooden dome structures, unique in Switzerland: Salt Domes I and II. Together with the conventional storage halls, the two salt domes offer space for over 240,000 tons of salt. This would ensure Switzerland's unrestricted supply of de-icing salt even after twelve consecutive weeks of extreme winter (source: Saline.ch).

Rheinfelden Old Town, Switzerland

Highlight • Historical Site

Rheinfelden - The oldest Zähringer town in Switzerland
The town with great memories! The oldest Zähringer town in Switzerland is located directly on the quietly flowing Rhine. The historic old town enchants with large and small sights, open splendor and hidden gems.
Well-preserved remains of the former ring wall with the Messerturm, the Storchennestturm and the Obertorturm still surround parts of the old town today. The narrow streets with their picturesque corners and their meaningful names such as Rumpelgasse, Futtergasse, Kuttelgasse and Geissgasse will surprise you.
A tour of Rheinfelden - where should you start with all the large and small sights, the open splendor and the hidden gems that the Rheinfelden old town has to offer? A good starting point is the town hall, centrally located on Marktgasse, with its massive tower. The town hall has a magnificent baroque façade and a very beautiful inner courtyard.
Stroll up Marktgasse and turn left at Albrechtsplatz to the Johanniter Chapel. Go through the small gate to the banks of the Rhine, which suddenly flows majestically in front of you, look downstream at the city skyline and see for yourself: the builders of this beautiful city had taste!

Old Rhine Bridge, Rheinfelden

Highlight • Bridge

Rhine Bridge "Border crossing between the two Rheinfelden"
The old Rhine Bridge is a Rhine and border crossing between the two Rheinfelden. Crossing is only permitted for pedestrians, bicycles, mopeds, taxis and the local bus.
From the ferry to the bridge.
There was already a ferry in the area of today's bridge during Roman rule. The Zähringers, who expanded the market town of Rheinfelden into a town, also had a ferry connection across the Rhine. It ensured the connection to the road to the Zähringen possessions in Breisgau.
The first bridge was probably built in the second half of the 12th century, because in 1198 a citizen of Rheinfelden was referred to in a document as Heinricus de Ponte (Heinrich von der Brücke). It was therefore the oldest bridge between Constance and Strasbourg, even before the middle bridge in Basel, which was built in 1225.
Pedestrian bridge.
Except for taxis and the local bus, cars are no longer allowed to use the bridge. The crossing over the Rhine and the entire old town is reserved for bicycles at walking pace and pedestrians.
The Rhine bridge offers a wonderful view of the old town facades and the Park Hotel on the Rhine.

This is one of my favorite tours that I always enjoy doing.

We actually only wanted to go to the Riedmatt dam, but it was too beautiful to turn back. The affogato siciliano🍧 in Bad Säckingen was great.

Once again, the car had to be used as a means of transport for bicycles to get to the starting point of our bike tour.
The cycle tour that I found somewhere on the Internet is called the Rhein Er-Fahrt and that we have expanded to suit our taste. The tour ran from Säckingen via Schwörstadt, Beuggen, Rheinfelden Herten. Then …

Note ☝🏼The route directly on the Rhine contains some stairs and narrow trails on the river

A cool ride on a dreary Friday… 🥶
If I'm not daydreaming on my bike, I'm not cycling past the underpass in Kaiseraugst… 🫣
After a short break in Rheinfelden (CH), I continue towards "my" tree on the Wallbacherhöhe. I enjoy the descent with my ears pinned back and roll through to Stein.

Today the weather was good, it was dry, neither too hot nor too cold and only the headwind was a bit of a nuisance.

The tour continued for about 18 km to Waldshut, but in beautiful Laufenburg the battery was almost at the end, so I did the rest without a GPS. The bike path is great, and the ride along the Rhine through Klein-Basel is great. At the request of the government, we stayed on the German side, so we followed the signs …
