Astrograph and Spectroheliograph House (Hainberg Observatory)

Highlight • Monument

This is not just any observatory, this is the location of the Hainberg astrograph. Karl Schwarzschild and Ejnar Hertzsprung did research here. History of science was written here (Hertzsprung-Russell diagram)!
Nowadays this area is lovingly looked after by the Amateur Astronomical Association Göttingen e.V. This also includes the possibility of public tours. Dates and a lot of interesting information can be found at avgoe.de. It is worth it!

Bismarck Tower Göttingen

Highlight • Monument

Huge and massive, built of stone, the tower is located very close to Göttingen. Depending on the route, reaching it can be strenuous. It's open until 6 pm on weekends and public holidays. It also looks beautiful at night when it's illuminated.

Bismarck Tower, Göttingen

Highlight • Monument

The view from the Bismarkturm over Göttingen into the Leinetal is very beautiful. The Pluto station on the Göttingen Planet Trail is also here. The planetary path does not end here. The previous end is approx. 3 kilometers further in Diemarden am Mühlendamm. There is a stele there for some trans-Neptunian heavenly bodies.

This point is historically significant because it belongs to the "nucleus" of the Gaussian triangle network, which formed the basis of the Gauss-Krüger coordinate system as a Cartesian coordinate system.
This used to be the end of the Göttingen Planet Trail. Contrary to the monument protection requirements, the "Plutotafel" was attached to the measuring pedestal and had to be removed again.

Forest Path at Kleperberg

Highlight • Trail

Here it goes up to the Bismarck Tower, or down. A beautiful path through a mixed deciduous forest.

The Four Lindens Rest Area

Highlight • Rest Area

Nice place near the Schillerwiese. 4 older, gnarled linden trees give this seating group a cosiness. The Friedensplatz is on the way north towards the Owl Tower. There, on April 11, 1871, the forestation of the Hainberg began with the planting of the Peace Oak, initiated by Mayor Georg Merkel. With this in mind, the Göttingen Beautification Association was founded in 1876. As a result, the forest here was quite furnished. Lookout towers and points (Eulenturm, Bismarck tower, Bismarckstein) were built with the corresponding viewing aisles, seating groups like this one, solid stone signposts and wooden towers at the Mackenröder Spitze and on the Hünstollen.

Owl Tower, Göttingen

Highlight • Monument

In the past, the viewing platform actually provided a view of the city. From up here it was also possible to toboggan down to the street in winter. Now everything is overgrown. But maybe it will be again.

Easily accessible, nice space, nice people, sufficient range of drinks and small snacks. I like coming here. The game reserve begins right next door, but also the Hainberg observatory and the Bismarck tower are not far. Horse shows also take place here. This place is an absolute highlight for the whole of Göttingen, despite the inn that has long been closed. The small children's playground with carousel is long history.
