Dove Cottage — William Wordsworth’s Home

Highlight • Historical Site

Dove Cottage offers an intimate look at the life of William Wordsworth. It was here that many of his finest poems were created, often inspired by the detailed descriptions of their surroundings captured by his sister Dorothy, who shared the Cottage with her brother, wife and children. Truly worth a visit!

The Coffin Route

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

The Rydal Coffin Route is a historic walking route in the Lake District. The route takes its name from the fact that it was the traditional route used to carry the coffins of the deceased for burial to St Oswald's Church in Grasmere, as there were no burial places at Rydal and Ambleside. It is a popular route, known for its magnificent views over Rydal Water and the surrounding mountains, and also passes famous places such as Rydal Mount and Dove Cottage, former home of the poet William Wordsworth.

St Mary's Church, Rydal

Highlight • Historical Site

The Chapel of St. Mary, Rydal, was built by Lady le Fleming of Rydal Hall, at a cost of £1,500. She herself laid the foundation stone in July, 1823. The Chapel was opened for public worship on Christmas Day, 1824, and consecrated by Dr. Blomfield, Bishop of Chester, on August 26th 1825.

William Wordsworth, who was then living at Rydal Mount, helped to choose the site, which was originally an orchard, and he composed two poems, one ‘to the Lady Fleming on seeing the Foundation preparing for the erection of Rydal Chapel, Westmorland’, and another, ‘On the same occasion’.
