View of Ambrock Grauwacke Quarry

Highlight • Viewpoint

Around Hagen there are a lot of greywacke quarries. Here, explosives and huge construction machinery are being used to mined it, and later, for example, to build roads or train tracks. The view in such an open pit is impressive in any case.

Quarry Hagen Ambrock
Witnesses from the past - searching for traces in the quarry Ambrock
On the edge of the Volmetal an interesting piece of geological history awaits the interested visitors.

On the B54 from Dahl to Eilpe the view fills a field wall, which has no natural origin. It is the quarry Ambrock, where the company Cemex dismantles Grauwackegestein. The huge Köster quarry on the edge of the Bachtal valley mainly produces greywacke varieties for road construction.

For the participants of this excursion, it is about the treasures of the past, created around 400 million years ago. From a geological point of view, these are Middle Devonian Brandenberg layers, which also fascinate scientists. Here a diverse and previously unknown stock of fossils of early land plants and also tank fish was found.

Equipped with helmets, our treasure hunters climb the upper part of the quarry after a short drive and a half-hour hike. When the weather is clear, there is a rewarding view over the hilly landscape of the Sauerland. Before the big search, the guide explains the geological connections and processes to the formation of Sauerland and Rhenish Slate Mountains.

Now the participants of the excursion have to search for and find fossils from bygone days. The explanations are there on the foot. After three hours, the best finds will find their way into the backpacks and bags before returning home. Finally, we return to the restaurant Kuhfeld. With coffee and cake everyone can talk shop about the eventful trip.

Weatherproof clothing and sturdy footwear are required, while the hammer and magnifier help expose and inspect the fossils. In addition, should be thought of food and enough bags for the finds.

For a long time I wanted to see the Hagen-Ambrock quarry.
The route I chose from a "Komootler" was not too long, but also not "without" and with many heights. We had to look for many paths in the leaves, cross streams and climb through fallen trees.
Some paths were blocked off and we had to look for alternatives - …

A beautiful hike with 300 meters of elevation gain that you hardly notice. Plus, there are fantastic views of Hagen along the way, and of course, the option to easily extend the tour. The next hike there is already planned.
