Craftsmen's bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The special thing about the building is its creation. Around fifty artisans from Europe, Japan and the United States had built the bridge in the summer using traditional tools and handicraft techniques, without using machines, electricity or modern technology. The basis was a cooperation between the Hanseatic City and the association Kesurokai e.V. to preserve traditional handicraft techniques. The Hanseatic City of Lüneburg financed the material for the bridge as well as the board and lodging of the craftsmen. Have fun discovering 🤗 Source: hansestadtlueneburg

The Bockelsberg and the surrounding area were designed and reforested on the initiative of senior forester a.D. Hermann Busse and the Lüneburg Beautification Association he founded in 1887.
Many ponds were also created. A fisherman managed 20 fish ponds. The Fischerhaus was built for him. Designed by the architect Hermann Matthies, known for his local style, it was completed in 1894.

One of the large ponds has several smaller islands in the middle. Ideal breeding ground for grey herons (in the trees), a pair of swans, Canada geese, ducks and rails.

Wonderful pond view

Highlight • Lake

The ponds are also an attraction in the Ilmenau meadows and invite you to linger. Swans, ducks and geese also think so. The animals are used to people and if you stop, you can watch them go about their business.

The stage on the Via Scandinavica from Lünenburg to Bienenbüttel is again one of the short stages and runs in a south-southeast direction. It follows the Ilmenau river uphill. The term "uphill" should be used with caution here, however, in an area where the mountains reach a height of 31 or 33 meters above sea level, and where we have to overcome a cumulative ascent of just 23 meters in altitude on a stage of just under 17 kilometers. The Ilmenau is therefore not a babbling or rushing stream, but rather a meandering, calm body of water.

The route ends at the stage location of Bienenbüttel between the St. Michaelis Church and the associated Protestant parish office.

The Via Scandinavica offers a connection along a migratory bird line from the Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn to northern Germany. The route continues via Lübeck, Lüneburg, Celle, Hanover and Göttingen to the border area between Thuringia and Hesse, from where paths lead towards Santiago de Compostela, Rome and Jerusalem.
