Lombardsijde Creek

Highlight • Lake

The Creek of Lombardsijde is a spacious inlet of the Yser west of Lombardsijde and north of the marina Novus Portus. It was created by closing off the former channel with a dike, the Halve Maandijk. De Kreek is part of the Yzermonding nature reserve.
At low tide, the inlet is dry except for a deep water-filled gully. This deep channel is a remnant of the former northern channel, the Ebgat. At high tide, the inlet is completely submerged.
Historical photos  show that the shape of the Creek and its banks have hardly changed in the last hundred years.

In 1928, the contracting firm of Julien and Jerome Soetaert started on the right bank of the Yser, halfway between Nieuwpoort-Stad and the salt marsh area, with the construction of a second post-war oyster farm in Nieuwpoort. The complex consisted of a large bowl-shaped basin for oyster, lobster and mussel cultivation and an adjoining house. The construction was started by one Albert Horen from Lyon and one Edgard Dentand, but the nursery soon came into the hands of Adelson Fagnard. This Brussels resident, together with his sons Robert and Paul, also owned the villa “Les Vanneaux” on the Zeedijk in Nieuwpoort-Bad. However, the well and the adjacent building have been preserved. Over the years, a biological laboratory of the University of Ghent and a nature relief center for sick and injured seabirds were installed here. With the establishment of the state nature reserve “De IJzermonding” in Nieuwpoort-Lombardsijde, the last remnants of the nursery eventually disappeared. The building was demolished in 2005 and the associated well was converted into a nature-educational tidal pool.

Nieuwpoort Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

The current lighthouse of Nieuwpoort on the right bank dates from 1949, but had two predecessors on the same site.
The first dated from 1883 and was irreparably damaged during the First World War.
A new tower was built in 1923-1926.
This in turn was destroyed during the Second World War.
The current one was built after the war based on the model of the tower from 1923-1926.

Put into operation in 1949.
Cylindrical concrete tower painted in red and white stripes.
Height: 28m
two red flashes every 14 seconds
Range: 15 nautical miles (1 nautical mile = 1852m)
The light installation made according to the Fresnel principle dates from 1923-1926. This equipment was brought to Paris in 1940 and thus survived the destruction in 1944. It originally worked on gas and was later converted to electricity.
With its red and white paint and its typical silhouette, the tower is a unique beacon in the Nieuwpoort dunes. Its silhouette also serves as a logo for the city of Nieuwpoort.
