Linden Mill, Diest

Highlight • Monument

The mill was built in 1742 and originally stood in Schaffen, on the Doodsberg. In 1887 he moved to the Mierenberg in Assent. The mill was in operation until 1953. Six years later, the city bought it and it was rebuilt on the city walls. Today the mill belongs to the heritage of the Provincial Domain Halve Maan, which manages the monument in collaboration with 'Living Mills' and keeps it in good working order.
The Lindenmolen is a unique example because of its windmill case, one of the largest in Flanders. It is a stake or standard mill, so named after the large trunk (stake or standard) from which the entire mill case hangs. The trunk also serves as a pivot to turn the mill to the wind (turning). This is done with a kind of pulley on which a chain can be wound. Around the mill are twelve stones to which the chain can be attached, the creepers

SINT-JANSBERG: Archeosite, iron sand quarries and the Gorenbroek

On the territory of Zelem, the Sint-Jansberg-Gorenbroek site forms a remarkable transition from the Demer valley to an adjacent Diestiaan hill.
The historic 'Gorenbroek' grassland area is very wet and even peaty at the edges.
It is managed as hay meadow and roughage, among other things, in function of the snipe.
The forests on the hill provide for the presence of sparrowhawk, buzzard, hawk, falcon and black woodpecker.

Along the banks of the Zwart Water is the archeological site of 'the disappeared church of Zelem', which dates back to the 7th century and around which the first village center was situated.
Carved into the elongated Diestiaan hill, seventeen iron sand quarries remind us of the early medieval reclamations.

Sint-Jansberg Monastery

Highlight • Religious Site

This monastery, of the order of the Carthusians, was founded in 1329 by the Lord of Diest and his second wife, Johanna of Flanders. During the 14th and 15th centuries the monastery expanded. However, it was destroyed by the troops of William of Orange in 1582. This also resulted in the loss of a very important library.
Reconstruction was started in 1602. They started with the cloister and the guest house. The Gothic chapel, consecrated in 1459, followed from 1616-1618. The gatehouse was built in 1647 and a guest house with the St. John's Tower in 1663. Construction activities also took place in the 18th century, in a classicist style. In 1753 the interiors and in 1765 the windows were adapted to the taste of that time.
The monastery was a center of literature, bookbinding and education. Petrus Dorlandus, the possible author of the morality "Elckerlijc", was a monk in this monastery.

Oude Pastorie Farm (Donkelhoeve)

Highlight • Historical Site

The municipality of Zelem had three parsonages throughout its history. The first was, and still is, located on the Kolenberg and called "Hoeve Oude Pastorij," better known locally as the "Donkelhoeve." Between 1969 and 1972, this farm served as a filming location for the BRT serial "Wij, Heren van Zichem" (We, Lords of Zichem), stories about "De Witte van Sichem" (The White Man of Sichem) and "Het leven van Herman Coene" (The Life of Herman Coene), written by Ernest Claes. In those stories, the farm belonged to farmer Coene. In those days, the pastor's residence was always connected to a farm that provided the pastor with his daily necessities.

Chapel of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows

Highlight • Religious Site

This chapel was built in 1925. It replaced an older chapel that had to disappear and played a role in funeral processions. The current chapel was built on land donated by a local resident. It was designed by a headmaster and teacher from Zelem and various parts were made locally. For example, the turret was made by the old craft school of Sint-Jansberg. The chapel is also known in Zelem as Chapel Mother of Sorrows and the Schanskapel after the redoubt that once stood in the immediate vicinity.
