Ruins on Sv. Valentin on Sabotin

Highlight • Historical Site

To the southeast of the Sabotin ridge rises the 535 m high peak of St. Valentin, where the restored ruins of the church complex are visible. A pilgrimage church was built at this site at the end of the 14th century, where services were held until its abolition in 1782.

The church complex, which was preserved as a skeleton until the First World War, when it was almost destroyed, still attracted many visitors. In 1947, the state border was drawn along the Sabotin ridge and the area became almost inaccessible. After Slovenia gained independence, Sabotin became an extremely popular excursion spot.

From the top we have a wonderful view from the Goriška Brda across the Italian plain to the Dolomites and the Julian Alps to Sveta Gora in front of us to the edge of the Trnovski Gozd and the Vipava Valley to the Karst and the Gulf of Trieste. Below us, the Soča River winds towards the sea.

A battle line took place here during the First World War, and some caverns and monuments are well preserved to this day.

You can enjoy the incredible view from Sabotin to the Adriatic sea, Alps and Brda. Unfortunately, my pictures taken with the phone are not good enough to share.

Sabotin Peace Park Bunkers and Caves

Highlight • Historical Site

The Sabotin mountain hut was once a barracks for the Yugoslav army, as the border between Slovenia and Italy runs along the entire Sabotin ridge, as the guards on the way warn us. Since Sabotin was also a strategic point and witnessed many battles during the First World War, we can see the preserved bunkers, ditches and caverns, which are taken care of at the Sabotin Peace Park. They also organize guided tours.

The view in front of the hut takes us from the Dolomites, Carniola and Julian Alps to Goriška Brda and the Italian plain all the way to the Adriatic Sea.
