Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption (Santander)

Highlight • Religious Site

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption (Santander) is located very close to the sea and its appearance is very austere if we compare it with others of the time.

The history of the cathedral dates back to the times when Santander was granted the status of jurisdiction in 1187, under the tutelage of the abbot of its church, this meant a great economic boost for the town with which the cathedral could be built and the castle, which was later called Puebla Vieja, as well as walls that defended the busy port and its inhabitants.

The current building of the Cathedral of Santander is made up of 2 overlapping Gothic-style churches. The lower one was built in the first third of the s. XIII is the parish of Christ and the upper one was built during that century and has had to be rebuilt and enlarged, in 1941 Santander suffered a fire that affected this part of the Cathedral.

Santander Post Office Palace

Highlight • Monument

On November 7, 1926, the current Communications Palace was inaugurated, a work by the architects Zuazo and Fernandez Quintanilla, in the mountain regionalist style, offering postal and telegraph services. In the great fire of Santander in 1941, the post office building was spared even though it was located in the affected area at the time of the fire.

Stone Crane of Santander

Highlight • Monument

An iconic crane, erected on the La Monja wharf and now located next to the Botín Center in Santander, its profile reminds us of the city's port past.

The Stone Crane was built in 1896 and 1900 by Sheldon and Gerdtzen as a result of a plan to improve the North Coast of Santander Bay. It is a crane weighing t30 tons and fourteen meters high, it is built with the best quality steel of the time. In its rear part it has some counterweights with a weight of 34 tons. The entire structure of the crane rests on a base built from reused ashlars from the old docks of the city, its total weight without counting this part of stone being 48 tons.
