Highlight • Settlement

The Lauter is divided into 2 channels in the city center, which flow together again on the outskirts of the city. Because of this, Wissembourg is sometimes called Little Venice.

Schlupfgass, Wissembourg

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

If you walk between the old buildings, you will unexpectedly find yourself on the bridge over the Lauter and suddenly feel like you are in another world. The way the river is built between the houses gives the whole place a particularly beautiful atmosphere.

The Abbey of Wissembourg was founded in the 7th century by East Frankish noblemen on an island of Lauter. The Benedictines who worked here in the subsequent period to a considerable influence, so that the abbey is considered one of the richest of the Holy Roman Empire. It was secularized in 1524.
The predominantly Gothic church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul dates back to the end of the 13th century. The laterally positioned Romanesque bell tower dates back to the predecessor building from the 11th century. Noteworthy are frescoes in the church from the 14th and 15th centuries, not least the unfinished high Gothic cloister of the monastery on the north side of the church, which is considered one of the most beautiful in the Upper Rhine. There are also a number of tombstones of historically significant abbots.

The small town of Wissembourg owes its charm to many things, but the traditional half-timbered houses are particularly remarkable. Take the time to stroll around and appreciate the colorful streets that stand out beautifully amidst the vineyards.

Unfortunately, Cafe Rebert was closed. Otherwise, every corner was decorated and the Christmas market was set up.

France is just behind the wine gate... 💡😀
I just wanted to test whether the French soil still supports me and whether I can endure it 😉
The result was.... 👍 Great, maybe because it was an unexpected city for me....
How many such spontaneous "unexpectabilities" fit into such a few days 🤔 Please just keep it up... 👍😄

With the bad weather forecast ☂️, our hike 🥾 turned into just a city trip.
By the way, Daniel Rebert's cakes 🍰 weren't served until we got back to the campsite 🏕 in the caravan.😋
