Muxumurru

Highlight • Summit

. The environment of the steep slope of the mountain is fascinating covered with tall grasslands above the forest jungles of Irati. And above the fine silhouette of the Orhi. In the mountain meadows there are quite a few trails everywhere that can confuse the way. Most are traces of herds of cows, sheep and horses that graze on the slopes of the mountains until the cold and snow arrive. The course of the route maintains a direct course along the main hill of the mountain towards the top of Muxumurru (1,630 m). In the cattle corrals there are also mountain paths that surround the Muxumurru to the west, offering the possibility of surrounding the summit of the mountain to the left and continuing the ascent by the Origaratea raft. The route passes through the green hill that forms the summit of Muxumurru and descends towards the Origaratea pass, where milestones of the GR-12 long-distance trail appear. The path passes along one side of the pond and begins the final stretch of the ascent up a fairly steep ramp. The mountain pastures are clean of weeds and allow the climbing zetas to be drawn to the liking of each mountaineer, according to the rhythm and physical wear and tear that each one wants to carry.

The Pic d’Orhy is the highest point in the Basque Country at 2,017 meters above sea level. It offers an incredible panorama of the Bay of Biscay, the Pic d’Anie, Béarn and the first peaks of the Pyrenees. From Larrau, the ascent is along a sharp and arid ridge which remains accessible.

Ollokia/Abodi Nordic Ski Center

Highlight • Rest Area

The Ollokia car park is at the passage of the old Pikatua border post, between the Salazar Valley and the French department of Pyrénées Atlantiques. The facilities have become a Nordic ski center with more than 25 kilometers of skiable slopes and marked out during the snow season, in the winter months. The rest of the year is the starting point for several mountain routes, hiking, trail running and mountain biking in the Sierra de Abodi and the Selva de Irati. On the horizon of the Pyrenean mountain range, the sharp silhouette of the Orhi stands out, the main summit of the route, a place with an intense attraction in the mythology that surrounds the traditions and legends of the peoples in the Salazar Valley. The route leaves the cross-country ski center along the track that goes down to the Selva de Irati through the Llano de Koixta. There is no possible loss because it is the only path that goes down into the valley through the forest of beech and fir trees. Other options continue along the mountain range and go through the peaks, hills and megalithic sites of Abodi. The most frequented trail is the GR-T 10 between the Nordic Ski Center and the Tapla Pass. The mountain range is an extensive high-mountain livestock area since ancient times, it is about 20 kilometers away between the Irati and Salazar valleys and preserves a dozen megalithic remains, the most outstanding being the Gaztanbidea burial mound and the Arrizabala menhir, in the Pass of the Saddlebags.
