Muchelney Abbey Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

Owned by English Heritage, Muchelney Abbey lies in ruins with its extraordinary footprint still very clearly visible. While the main abbey buildings were destroyed by Henry VIII in the 16th century, the abbot’s house still stands and is in excellent condition.

With stone carvings, stained-glass windows and breathtaking architecture, visiting is absolutely worth the time. The abbey also lies just off the River Parrett Trail and if you want more history, you can visit the nearby Priest’s House too, owned by the National Trust.

Church of St Martin, Kingsbury Episcopi

Highlight • Religious Site

Built during the 14th century, this beautiful church has a Gothic Somerset Tower which has a golden hue, thanks to its local hamstone material. A Grade I listed building, the Church of St Martin hasn’t changed much in its lengthy life, although it did undergo some renovation during the 19th century. Somerset has plenty of beautiful and old churches, but the tower of this one is particularly spectacular.

It's clearly visible from the River Parrett Trail and can be rather magical if there's mist hanging in the air.
