It's a demanding ride best suited for experienced gravel riders with very good fitness who are ready for a full day in the saddle.

Prepare for a journey through diverse landscapes, starting with sections of packed fine gravel before transitioning to much rougher terrain. You'll encounter larger, looser gravel, dirt, and even some primitive singletrack where the old railroad bed has eroded. The route largely follows the historic Klickitat Trail, tracing the Wild and Scenic Klickitat River through carved gorges and past interesting geologic formations. The remote Swale Canyon offers dramatic views of basalt cliffs and a profound sense of isolation, while further east, you'll traverse ranch lands on the Goldendale Plateau with panoramic views of the Columbia River and distant mountains like Mt. You'll also encounter a necessary 3-mile detour on State Route 142 around a missing trestle near the town of Klickitat. Keep an eye out for ticks and rattlesnakes, especially in rocky areas, and plan your ride for cooler seasons to avoid extreme heat.
