Description

If you're looking for a truly epic gravel biking adventure that tests your limits and rewards you with incredible scenery, the Klickitat Park – View of the Klickitat Valley loop from Lyle is absolutely worth your time. This is a challenging 61.5-mile (99.0 km) route with a significant 6539 feet (1993 metres) of climbing, typically taking around 8 hours and 6 minutes to complete. It's a demanding ride best suited for experienced gravel riders with very good fitness who are ready for a full day in the saddle.

What to expect on Klickitat Park – View of the Klickitat Valley loop from Lyle

Prepare for a journey through diverse landscapes, starting with sections of packed fine gravel before transitioning to much rougher terrain. You'll encounter larger, looser gravel, dirt, and even some primitive singletrack where the old railroad bed has eroded. The route largely follows the historic Klickitat Trail, tracing the Wild and Scenic Klickitat River through carved gorges and past interesting geologic formations. The remote Swale Canyon offers dramatic views of basalt cliffs and a profound sense of isolation, while further east, you'll traverse ranch lands on the Goldendale Plateau with panoramic views of the Columbia River and distant mountains like Mt. Adams. Be ready for a bumpy ride; wide tires (40-45c or more) are highly recommended, and front suspension will add comfort on the chunky, rocky sections.

Planning your visit

This is a remote route, so come prepared. Access points are limited, and cell reception can be spotty, making it crucial to carry sufficient water, food, and flat repair supplies. Be aware that Swale Canyon, a highlight of the ride, can be closed from late June to mid-October due to fire danger, so check conditions before you go. You'll also encounter a necessary 3-mile detour on State Route 142 around a missing trestle near the town of Klickitat. Keep an eye out for ticks and rattlesnakes, especially in rocky areas, and plan your ride for cooler seasons to avoid extreme heat.
