Description

If you're looking for a quintessential Southern California road cycling experience that blends iconic beaches with a touch of urban grit, the Manhattan Beach and Pier – El Segundo Beach loop from Westchester/Veterans delivers. This moderate 34.1-mile (54.9 km) route, with 641 feet (195 metres) of elevation gain, takes about 2 hours and 32 minutes to complete, offering a fantastic coastal journey for those who enjoy continuous ocean views and a lively atmosphere.

What to expect on Manhattan Beach and Pier – El Segundo Beach loop from Westchester/Veterans

As you embark on this ride, you'll primarily cruise along the well-maintained Marvin Braude Bike Trail, also known as 'The Strand,' which offers uninterrupted ocean views. The journey takes you past the iconic Manhattan Beach Pier, a hub of activity, and through vibrant beach communities. Expect mostly paved surfaces, though some very short sections might have cobblestones or unpaved terrain, and you might encounter gentle hills around Dockweiler and El Porto Beach. A unique visual contrast appears near El Segundo Beach, where the path passes beneath the massive industrial towers of the Chevron oil refinery, juxtaposed against the natural beauty of the sand and surf. This route is generally accessible, but be aware that the shared path can get busy, especially near popular spots like the Manhattan Beach Pier, requiring careful navigation around pedestrians.

Planning your visit

This road cycling route is best enjoyed when the coastal path is less crowded, so consider a weekday ride or an early morning start on weekends. The path is exposed to the elements, so check the weather for strong winds, which can sometimes blow sand onto the trail. While the route is mostly flat, the overall distance and potential for busy sections mean you should be comfortable with moderate cycling efforts. Parking is available in the Westchester/Veterans area, but it's always wise to arrive early to secure a spot, especially during peak season.
