Historic Mill at Mühlweg 35

Highlight • Historical Site

The Bavarian State Archives show that in 1250 there were three millers in Bürgstadt who were required to pay rent. According to records by local historian Dean Norbert Schmitt, the oldest mention of the upper mill is probably in 1569 with the miller Hans Mohr. According to this there is a Lukas Müller who is listed in the guild list from 1595 to 1608. He also lived in the house at number 15 on Hauptstrasse. His initials "LM" and a "miller's hoe" are also depicted on this house. A wayside shrine from him from 1609 was also found, which can now be found in the museum in Bürgstadt. In 1732 the upper mill was torn away by a large flood, the so-called "Michelswasser", and then rebuilt by the head miller Sebastian Reichert. Two of his grandchildren were later ennobled. The upper mill has changed hands many times. In 1796 the mill was divided. While Franz Xaver Reichert ran an oil and gypsum mill, his brother-in-law Andreas Stier continued to run the grinding mill. In 1871, Karl Beck owned Franz Xaver Reichert's share. Due to a series of twists of fate, the two mills were reunited in 1918. Karl Beck's son, Anton Beck, took over the mill and in 1919 built a workshop for a cutting mill with box production, a sawmill and a water turbine for generating electricity. Johannes Bahr ran the grinding mill until 1960 and the sawmill until 1961.
