Canal d'Amenée

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Connecting canal between the Lac du Der reservoir and the Marne. The reservoir was built in 1974 and, with its water surface of 4,800 hectares, is still one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe. The main function of the Lac du Der is as a retention basin to protect the Marne valley and, further along, the city of Paris from flooding and to ensure that the water level of the Seine in Paris is always sufficient in dry summers. The water level of the lake fluctuates greatly: it reaches its highest level every year in June (maximum 15 m), and then drops by up to 10 m by December. The cycle path along the canal gives an impression of the water masses that are regulated here.

Highlight • Bridge

Beautiful little footbridge to cross the canal at its entrance into the Der reservoir. To the north you have a panoramic view of the canal as far as the eye can see, and to the south you can see the dam.

The lake was created in 1974 to regulate the water levels of the Marne River and prevent flooding of the Seine.

The landscapes change throughout the year, and each season shines in its own way.
