Saint Willibrord Church ⛪

Highlight • Religious Site

Except for the refined Renaissance portal, the church was built in a flamboyant Gothic style. It is dedicated to Saint Willibrordus, apostle of the Low Countries (7th century). The walls of the nave are covered with 17th century wood carvings. Eye-catchers are the confessionals, the organ case, some funerary monuments, including the very expressive medallion portrait of the governor of Gravelines, who died during the siege of Saint-Venant in 1657. the cistern, a water reservoir from the 18th century, is connected to the church by a arcade. The pumps have fittings in the shape of dolphins.

The Grevelingen Cistern is a cistern in the city of Grevelingen, which belongs to the Northern Department.
This cistern was built in 1724 and collected rainwater from its own roof, from the church roof and from the roof of the Huxelles and Varennes barracks. The cistern could hold 1,420,000 liters of water, which was initially used as drinking water for the military. Later, the city population also benefited from this water supply.
The unique construction, built in limestone, was important because the water supply was very problematic due to brackish groundwater and stagnant or very slow flowing surface water and water had to be available in case of a siege or a period of great drought.

Varennes Barracks

Highlight • Other

The Caserne Varennes is a former barracks in the town of Gravelines, which is part of the Northern Department. The barracks were built in 1737, following the example of Vauban's. It is a large building with three floors plus an attic and could accommodate 600 soldiers: 12 people per room. Since the garrison consisted of 1000 people, there were also other barracks as well as pavilions for the officers. Before that, the soldiers were housed with the residents of the city, which regularly led to conflicts. Most of the other barracks disappeared after the garrison left Gravelines, but this building was preserved because it was converted into housing for the city's residents.

The Grevelingen Belfry is the medieval belfry in the northern French city of Grevelingen (Gravelines). Grevelingen has had a belfry since the Middle Ages, which was then a simple wooden structure. The current belfry was built in 1827. It is a square tower, made of yellow brick and equipped with an octagonal dome. The tower has a clockwork with four dials. It is one of 56 belfries in Belgium and France that have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Grevelingen Citadel (also called a castle or arsenal) is a military building in the city of Grevelingen (Gravelines) belonging to the French Northern Department.
The citadel was built as a castle from 1528, at the hands of Emperor Charles V in his function as Count of Flanders. It was a square and moated building that was accessible via a bridge after which one had to go between two flanking towers. Incidentally, the entire city was then also provided with a wall: the ramparts of Gravelines. After all, it was a border town. A dozen buildings were found in the complex. In 1654 a devastating explosion took place at the ammunition depot.
When Grevelingen came into French hands in 1658, the city mainly became a garrison town and the castle was transformed into an arsenal by Vauban.
The remaining spaces now house the Musée du Dessin et de l'Estampe orginale. This includes engravings.
The spaces include the Poudrières (gunpowder warehouse) from 1742, the Salle du Pilier from 1680, the Corps de Garde (guard house) from 1741 and the Casemate du Four à Pain (casemate of the baking ovens) from 1528.
The arsenal also houses a theater: the Vauban scene.
