Very surprising, in a really insignificant alley, those beautiful drawings.
Very worthwhile!

Laon Old Town — Murals and Fortifications

Highlight • Historical Site

The historically significant city has many medieval buildings, including the famous Laon Cathedral. With the historic fortified old town on a table mountain, Laon has the largest contiguous protected area in France.

Laon was already a Gallic fortress in the 5th century. Further information e.g. here: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laon

In 1124, the Abbey of Saint-Martin de Laon was founded on the site of a former Carolingian collegiate church. The church was built from 1160. There has been a hospital on the extensive site since the French Revolution. The church cannot be visited. The buildings are also worth seeing from the outside and the grounds can be entered. From the street behind the church there is a well-preserved cloister. The public library is housed in an adjoining building. This was still closed when we visited. Otherwise definitely a good opportunity to see the building from the inside.

Porte de Soissons

Highlight • Other

The Porte de Soissons is a medieval city gate in Laon. It is one of the three remaining city gates of Laon and was built at the beginning of the 13th century when the fortifications were resumed. The gate is located in the south-west of the medieval city and is built of sandstone and limestone. The gate was originally known as the Porte Saint-Martin or Soibert, but was later renamed after the nearby town of Soissons. The rear of the gate (which was demolished in 1895) offers a cross-section of this type of defensive system: a vaulted room on the first floor, giving access to the harrow and the machicolation.

The queen's troughs

Highlight • Other

It was between 1783 and 1788 that the Queen's Dragoons barracks (destroyed during the bombings of 1917) were built on the site of the current Lycée Paul-Claudel. The fountains or watering troughs, located outside the walls, were intended for the needs of the soldiers. They were enlarged in 1811 and used throughout the 19th century, and even before the First World War, horses still came to drink there. And if you turn around when you are overlooking the troughs, you can see on your right an old fortified city gate—now walled up—called the Holy Fountain Gate.
