Description
If you're looking for a challenging and diverse jogging experience in Fairfax County, the Lake Accotink – Accotink Stream Valley Park loop from Kings Park delivers. This difficult 10.6-mile (17.1 km) route, with 172 feet (52 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 1 hour and 45 minutes, making it a solid choice for those with very good fitness seeking a substantial workout. It's one of the more popular trails for a reason, offering a varied landscape that keeps things interesting from start to finish.
What to expect on Lake Accotink – Accotink Stream Valley Park loop from Kings Park
This loop takes you on a journey through a mix of surfaces, from paved asphalt and concrete to stonedust, packed gravel, and natural doubletrack sections with rocks and roots. You'll enjoy picturesque views of Lake Accotink, follow stretches along Accotink Creek, and pass through wooded areas and open fields. Keep an eye out for the historic Orange and Alexandria Railroad Trestle and the dam at Lake Accotink, which are notable landmarks. While some parts are mellow, expect steep, short climbs and descents, including a "quadricep-blaster" hill near the dam, confirming its difficult rating. This multi-use trail means you'll share the path with walkers and mountain bikers, and dogs are welcome.
Planning your visit
Be aware that the Lake Accotink trail terrain can become very muddy after heavy rains, and the area near the dam is prone to flooding, so check conditions before you go. For unobstructed lake views, especially of the marshland and tall trees, visiting in winter is ideal. The Lake Accotink Park area offers convenient amenities like a marina with restrooms and a water fountain, as well as picnic spots, which can be useful before or after your run.
